After working on this test I discovered a data race in how we write/flush our backup files, I have opened an issue to document the issue #17065, but it does not seem to be caused by the change I made in this PR. Instead the test exposes the issue easily. The f.Chmod(0444) done in the test exposes the issue, without it, the race is not triggered.
I could work on a follow-up and fix the race condition in another PR, in the meantime I have moved this test to a file that we do not run when go test -race is ran.

Technically there's no point editing release notes on main, because the actual release will get them from release-21.0 branch. This means that there's no need to do another commit on this PR with the release notes changes and it can be merged as-is. However, the edits I suggested can be used to write up the actual text that should be in the release, and we can edit the release after it has been published and add a Known Issues section to it with this text.

Description
This PR fixes the issue described in #17063, by using the proper variable when recording the errors from
be.backupFile.This should be ported to all branches as the regression (#16856) was introduced everywhere.
